The GiFTS Project: Work in Progress

We’re excited to share updates on the incredible work happening across our community gardens, exciting developments in the GiFTS project, and ways you can get involved in making Reading a greener, more sustainable place.

At the heart of our work this season is the GiFTS (Gathering in Food, Telling Stories) project. This initiative is all about scaling up community conversations and actions that highlight the social and environmental value of growing food together. Administered by Incredible Edible Reading (IER) in partnership with The Englefield Green Team (EGT), GiFTS is designed to connect food growers across Reading, creating a vibrant network of individuals and groups who are passionate about sustainable gardening.

What’s Happening?

Interviews and Storytelling: As part of the GiFTS project, we are capturing the stories of garden tutors, volunteers, and community members. These stories will not only celebrate the wonderful work being done but also inspire others to join the movement. If you're involved in one of our gardens and would like to share your story, please get in touch!

Interactive Maps: We’re working on QR codes that will link to interactive maps, guiding visitors directly to community gardens. This is especially helpful as some garden entrances can be tricky to find. These maps will soon be available on our website and via QR codes at key locations around Reading.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities: Join the Conversation

Garden Tutor Interviews: We’re currently setting up interviews with our dedicated garden tutors. If you’d like to participate, or if you know a volunteer or community member who would be a great addition, please contact us!

Networking Event: We’re planning an open day later this year to bring together garden tutors, food growers, and community members from across Reading. This will be a fantastic opportunity to network, share ideas, and build stronger connections. More details to come soon!

Get Involved!

Volunteering: Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, there’s always a place for you in our gardens. Volunteering not only helps our community grow but also offers you a chance to learn new skills, meet new people, and enjoy the outdoors.Storytelling and Media: We’re gathering video, photo, and written stories to share on our website and social media. If you have a story to share or skills in media production, we’d love to collaborate!

In the Works: Future Plans

Collaborative Garden Initiatives: We’re exploring the idea of a Reading Gardening Festival, where gardens across the city can host events, workshops, and open days throughout the year. Imagine a trail of green spaces, each offering something unique—this is the vision we’re working towards!

Digital Resources: Our website will soon feature more interactive content, including visual guides to each garden, how-to resources for new gardeners, and a calendar of events. These tools are designed to make it easier than ever to get involved with your local garden and connect with the wider community.

Thank You for Your Support!

We couldn’t do this without you—our dedicated volunteers, garden tutors, and community members. Your passion and commitment are what make Incredible Edible Reading such a special movement. Let’s keep growing together!
